More About Government Agencies and Organizations

FEMA – Federal Emergency Management Agency

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The primary mission of the Federal Emergency Management Agency is to reduce the loss of life and property and protect the Nation from all hazards, including natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters, by leading and supporting the Nation in a risk-based, comprehensive emergency management system of preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation.

DHS – The Department of Homeland Security

Created out of the fear of a September 11th style of attack, the DHS was created only about six years ago and is relatively new. Before the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, homeland security activities were spread across more than 40 federal agencies and an estimated 2,000 separate Congressional appropriations accounts.

In February 2001, the U.S. Commission on National Security/21st Century (Hart-Rudman Commission) issued its Phase III Report, recommending significant and comprehensive institutional and procedural changes throughout the executive and legislative branches in order to meet future national security challenges. Among these recommendations was the creation of a new National Homeland Security Agency to consolidate and refine the missions of the different departments and agencies that had a role in U.S. homeland security.

Executive Order 13228, issued on October 8, 2001, established two entities within the White House to determine homeland security policy: the Office of Homeland Security (OHS) within the Executive Office of the President, tasked to develop and implement a national strategy to coordinate federal, state, and local counter-terrorism efforts to secure the country from and respond to terrorist threats or attacks, and the Homeland Security Council (HSC), composed of Cabinet members responsible for homeland security-related activities, was to advise the President on homeland security matters, mirroring the role the National Security Council (NSC) plays in national security.

WHO – The World Health Organization

The WHO is a United Nations organization responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends. The WHO see health as a shared responsibility, involving equitable access to essential care and collective defense against transnational threats.

DHR – The Department of Human Resources (Human Services)

These departments are local to each state and are state operated. Most DHR’s are committed to strengthening individuals and families by providing social services through local departments and agencies throughout the state. Handling issues such as foster children; collecting and distributing child support; investigate abuse and neglect; and administer food stamps, temporary cash assistance and disability assistance for low-income citizens.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Definition care of www.salvationarmyusa.org.

Red Cross

Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation's premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering.

The international organization provides relief to millions on a daily basis through shelters, blood drives, financial support and much more. The Red Cross provides several means of support to troops in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as fast response in times of crisis in the United States.

Safety Tip

March 10, 2010
Swine Flu

square.gif Safety Tip #1
H1N1 Influenza

 Get a flu vaccine
Vaccines help your body build up resistances to influenza viruses. Just like computers need constant updates, your immune system needs constant updates for the latest influenza.

 Take preventive steps daily
Wash your hands frequently. Have sanitizer readily available for you and your family. Be aware of your surroundings, avoidance is the best means of stifling the spread of any germs.

Follow through when on a prescription
If you are given a prescription to eliminate a virus, complete the regimen. Stopping before taking the prescription before the recommended time frame will eliminate the weakest forms of a virus, allowing the stronger forms to adapt and increase their resistance. Possibly making a simple virus more adaptive and stronger; immune to the prescribed medicines.
